I broke my Kindle. Forgot I'd been reading it in bed last night; went to bed; knelt on it. Crunch. No more Kindle. This is sort of the problem with expensive electronics. Handy, but when they break, they really break.

I'd sort of like to replace it, because it's certainly nice to travel with. On the other hand, it's always been a nice toy, not an essential.

Replacement screens run about $70 on ebay. This is a bit more than I want to spend really, but I'll think about it. Better open it up first and make sure it actually *was* the screen that broke; it was a pretty ominous crunch.

I already have a rule about no electronics on the floor. I guess that rule needs to be extended to the bed also.

Amazon may replace it for you. They have a reputation for giving away free refurbished Kindles to users who break them, even if it's obviously the owner's fault not a problem with the Kindle. Basically they want people to stay locked in to their shopping ecosystem, so they are using the Kindle as a loss-leader to the point of giving them away. If you bought the Kindle new in the first place, and if you have an Amazon account at all, it may be worth trying.

Is that the kindle I bought you 2 years ago? I'll buy you another one, or ask Amazon if they can replace it on my account. I'm glad you got such a lot of use from it.

The basic model has come down a lot in price since Dec 2010 when I bought it, so I'm happy to get you a new one if that's what it takes. I'll give the support ppl a call in the morning.

Only to note: the most basic kindles are $69 new.

That's a basic e-ink model, without a keyboard.. but i have one from last year with the "special offers" and it's not bad at all.

I actually bought it last year for a trip to the beach, where I didn't want to destroy my very expensive iPad, and wanted something better for the sun. worked perfectly!
