Queries upon watching *Firefly*

Okay, can somebody please tell me:

Why, with a whole planet to ravage, do the Scary!Baddies have to follow one small ship? If they are apparently indiscriminate killers, i.e. lacking personal motivation, wouldn't they be more guaranteed of prey if they landed by a settlement and ravaged that, rather than chasing a ship all over the place?

How is it that the Goodie can take a knife to the neck and yet continue to fell mafiosi with his fists, but the tattooed thug can be incapacitated with the butt of a pistol?

How does she manage to play basketball in that top without her boobs popping out all over the place?

How does one small dog get to be so beautiful? (this is not related to Firefly except in that said dog is sitting at my feet).

To the first two questions: I'm afraid those are just standard tropes of the idiom. We don't ask questions about them for the same reason we don't ask how a ship that small manages to generate a gravitational field comparable to a planet's.

As for the third: It's been a while. Who plays basketball, and when?

Oh, yay firely! I agree that, although I like Firefly (and Joss Whedon's other stuff) an awful lot, strict adherence to making sense at each point is not something it has as a universal virtue.

If the Scary!Baddies you refer to are Reavers, that's just what they do. they are insane. After you watch the series, be sure to watch Serenity if you haven't already. But after.

Yes, them! But there's insane and insane, and that didn't seem very plausibly insane. I mean, especially when the one small ship was already on the planet. The first or second episode, I think.
