Met a lady in the dog run. Chatted. "Oooh, puffball mushrooms!" she said. Huge gigantic clump of puffball mushrooms at her feet. Apparently they're edible. Being doggy people, we both had spare poo bags with us; we split the hoard. Came home, checked online that they *are* the edible kind. Deciding now whether to make mushroom pasta or soup.

Broth plus gravy. Good for straight up eating, as stock for cooking something else, and for pouring over potatoes/chicken/whatever.

Make mushroom broth -and- mushroom gravy. Sorry I wasn't more clear; I blame the cats. And the heat. But mostly the cats. :p

Oh! I, uh, don't. Because I don't much like mushrooms and only ever buy them in pre-cooked condition. I -do- have several cookbooks with lots of mushroom recipes (and once, years ago, successfully made a nice mushroom gravy) but that doesn't help you at all. Also, they're in the storage garage, so even less helpful than not helpful at all. Negative helpfulness.

Puffballs seem to do well fried or sautéed and can be frozen but I'm not seeing much for gravy. Wrong type of mushroom? There are soup recipes available, though. So many choices for you! :D

Stir-fry mushrooms and broccoli together with some onions and garlic. Is delicious!

I don'tknow the aswenr to your question regarding common names of mushrooms. The powers that be keep on changing the latin names of the species which makes life more complicated than it already is. I suspect that you have hit on the anser and the common names are old rural tradition. Do you like cooking with mushrooms? If so, let me point you in the direction of the online book , The Cookbook of the Mycological Society of San Francisco edited by Louise Freedman.
