Apparently nyc.gov can't handle all the citizens of NYC checking it at once. This isn't very good, for something that's supposed to be the go-to site for emergency information. Particularly when you check out the news stations, and they link you to nyc.gov.

Where are the evacuation zones? Check nyc.gov - but it's down. Where are the shelters? Same. Where are the evac routes? Same. The news stations all link you to nyc.gov, which is excellent from the point of view of consistency and ease of production, but not very good at all when eight million people all try to do it at once and the server crashes.

We live on high ground, and we've stocked up on baked beans and toilet paper, so unless the winds are high enough to break the windows, we should be fine.

Head to Google and hope the information is cached there?

Yeah, you'd think, wouldn't you. They've set up the evac zone finder so that you enter your address, and then the server gives you the info for your address. Very nice, except when the server's waaaay overloaded.

I'm not in an evac zone; it's called Washington Heights for a reason. Still - emergency planning FAIL on the part of the city.

I am kind of curious how much water will go coursing down Broadway, though.

Me too! And we always get a lake in the back yard when there's more than about two inches of rain - with the 8-12ins forecast, it should be quite a splendid lake.
