I posted recently-ish about one Theodor Nöldeke, who was a teacher of Louis Ginzberg.

In another Ginzberg book (vol. 2 of Ginzei Schechter, thanks to Hillel Lavery-Yisraeli) I saw the following transliteration of the name Nöldeke:



Umlauts in Hebrew? I never saw that before. Did any of you?

At a very vague guess, it's either Yiddish, or a transliteration of someone's name rather than actual Hebrew. Yiddish has a whole bunch of funny diacritics (and digraphs and stuff).

Oh...yes, it's a transliteration of the name Nöldeke, with Yiddishish transliteration, so I suppose it's my first glimpse of the world of funny Yiddish diacritics.
