Torahs take sixty-odd cows to make, so it often happens that one's parchment doesn't all come from the same source, and has sometimes been processed in varying ways. Some processes leave the parchment quite smelly - goat is generally worse than cow, but even cow can be pretty striking. I was going along removing yuk as usual, and came to a particularly smelly sheet. Pungent? my goodness, it was practically still walking.

In another of those gloriously ironic moments, the writing on that sheet was talking about how the smoke from the animals burning on the altar would be "a pleasing odour to God."
