We weekended in Washington DC, on account of how we were invited to a wedding on Saturday night. Washington DC, the little we saw of it, was extremely pleasant - the suburbs were extensive but largely tasteful, with lots of green areas, and the downtown residential area we stayed in was also very nice. I'd describe the houses as Victorian, but I don't actually know what term Americans use, not having met anyone yet with the faintest interest in architecture, interspersed with some blocks of flats which were not unpleasing - not nearly as unpleasing as Queens, anyway. They seem to do a decent job of keeping the streets clean, always something you can appreciate, and even the less savoury parts of downtown were far less unsavoury than the corresponding parts of New York. And we happened upon parks and things on a fairly frequent basis. I liked it. We stayed with W's chum Becky, who was extremely gracious and managed to give the impression of being perfectly happy to have me sneeze through a jumbo-sized box of tissues while she was hosting meals.

The wedding was nice - friends of W's from Boston, as usual, and they had this super ravioli which was red, white, and green in stripes.

The bus back was less nice because every single person in the whole world had unaccountably decided to travel on the same road as us, so we crawled through New Jersey, and the bus was packed with idiots who were hell-bent on foisting their music on the rest of us - including the driver, who had an unfair advantage because he could use the speaker system. The chap over the aisle from me set up a fair competition with his earphones, though, so "Have yourselves a merry little Christmas now" was overlaid with "boom-boom THUNK, boom-boom THUNK" and the occasional "bang-bang-bang SWISH" from the guy in the next seat. I was very good and didn't start screaming.
