My DVD drive is sad. I feed it a DVD, and it knows it's been fed a DVD, and it even opens the software that plays movies, but then instead of going "whoosh" and playing the DVD, it just sits there grunting sadly.

And it started doing this in the middle of a movie. Why would it do that?

I've swapped out DVDs and no change, so it's not that.

I've tried restarting; letting it cool down and then restarting, both with and without DVD in drive; wiggling the tray a bit; cursing it; and walking away and pretending I didn't care (a technique that generally works better with lost keys, but worth a try).

I have no idea how one might fix this, and while I could spend all evening and then some online trying to find out what it might be, this is not an efficient use of my time. So I wish to pay a geek to tell me what's up (and with any luck, fix it).

I don't know any suitable geeks in NYC, and indeed the only thing I know to do is go to Best Buy. But one hears dreadful tales about the people there, who are not actually people who know about computers, but incompetent fools in blue t-shirts. If I'm going to pay someone to fix my laptop, I'd rather they were competent.

Any recommendations?
