October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, did you know that? And there's a poster in a national clothing store, thus: Breast Cancer - It's A Girl Thing.
This is sort of like saying Racism - It's A Black People's Thing.
That is, it's a bloody stupid thing to say.
Breasts are taboo enough already; if you say breast cancer is a Girl Thing you imply it's somehow terribly private and rather embarrassing, and you make it into something that Nice People Don't Talk About. When breast cancer is taboo, people don't learn about it, they don't spot it early enough, they're shy to seek treatment.*
And they DIE.
THEY DIE OF PREVENTABLE CANCER.
