We went shopping today and got more books. I wanted a thing called the Keset ha'Sofer, which is a slightly obscure source, and we had to go into the scary part of town for it. Turns out it's a sort of little book which lives in a bigger book, so I didn't see it on the shelves - and then realised that if I asked for it, the shop guy would probably tell me where to shove it, because it's definitely a boy's book. Will asked, and didn't get any trouble. But it annoys me both that a) I even thought it would happen and b) that it probably would have. I'm fed up with being in a society where people won't sell you a book based on your gender; I fear, though, that this problem affects more of Am Yisrael than the parts of it which live in Jerusalem.

Fun lesson this evening; we mostly cut quills - I wanted to spend a long time on knife technique, because if she cuts herself, her mother will probably blame me...and we had a long discussion about feminism as it applies to calligraphy. So it wasn't the average lesson, but it was interesting, all the same.

And we've nearly packed up the whole library. The time-consuming part is finding out the replacement costs, for the insurance. So far the library is worth about $6500, and we haven't packed it all yet. It's sort of comforting knowing we have such a huge library, because my sister's just bought her first car, which is ever so grown-up. Having a library is a compensation for having no car.
