Today, the 86th column - what happens when oxes gore other oxes, what happens when someone steals your ox, and what happens when you borrow someone's lawnmower (ok, or their ox) and it breaks. I'm struck by the proximity of the commandment "Do not steal" to "And if you do steal, here's how to deal with it." It's admirably practical - you can tell people not to steal all you want, but they're still going to steal. I'm often struck by how little people have changed.
It's funny - I usually write with turkey, cos it's a bit sturdier than goose.* Today I went to sit at my desk, picked up the quill that was there, sharpened it, and started writing - I noticed I was writing slower than usual, but didn't know why. One column later, I went to rinse my quill and found yesterday's turkey quill sitting by the sink. I'd been writing with goose all day. No wonder it was slow.
* Goose is thinner and more flexible, which is all right in its way, but can be taken too far - like using flimsy plastic cutlery. Sometimes you want something a bit more substantial.
