I started reading a novel this weekend - it was at our old age shul, and I needed reading matter. It started by describing a wonderful author, who made his readers weep, whose use of prose was unmatched in his generation, who had won many awards, but was curiously undersold. I think the author was doing self-projection and thinking he was being subtle, because he described this writer in such glowing terms, and likewise his precocious daughter who will grow up to be a novelist, and barely described the other central characters at all. By the second chapter, I hated the writer character for being so woefully misunderstood and yet so brave and for being so smugly and self-consciously described by the author, so I was extremely glad when he died in a car crash in about the fourth chapter. Didn't make the rest of the story much better, mind you, but at least that was the really annoying character out of the way.
