I live in New Mexico. I am with Mountain America Credit Union - but they only serve Rocky Mountain and west coast. I have been with them since 2002. I only get to the branch about once very six weeks. They still greet me by name. What few fees there are cheap compared to what the banks are charging.
For some reason I have it in my head that you are on the east coast, or in NYC. I don't know if this is helpful, or just TMI... but I heard a report about this credit union on NPR the other day and it made me wish that I lived in NY so I could join:
