I've never started any kind of course without some kind of orientation. Today was the first day of classes at YU.* I wouldn't have known that had I not phoned up last month and said uh, are you going to send me any registration stuff any time soon? but I had registered for classes and then...nothing. All YU buildings require YU ID for entrance, but nothing about how to get an ID. No campus map. No library plan. Nothing about whether the library affiliates with any other libraries. No borrowing info. Nothing about health insurance. Nothing about access to other facilities. I'm not sure whether I'm allowed to wear trousers or short sleeves.** Nothing about any student activities. Nothing about where one might eat, hang out, get internet - in short, nothing about any of the little things which one really likes to know upon starting a new school.
I turned up a couple of hours early, and had a bit more of a clue by the time class started. Apparently we were supposed to have called in at some office and picked up class materials - nothing important, but it was one more item in the list of Things No-One Told Me About. I don't even know where the office is. Presumably all YU grad students have taken mind-reading as undergraduates, so they assume one doesn't require any additional information.
Once past that: the class was quite agreeable, not too taxing and potentially going to get quite interesting. As yet, only three students. Then I taught my January bat mitzvah who was a sweetie as usual. Long day - spent the morning in Riverdale looking at the apartments W cased out last week. He has good taste; the one he lighted upon was indeed extremely nice. Lots and lots of light and power points.***
* Yeshiva University's graduate school. In British it rhymes with "yer shiver?" if you don't say it too poshly.
