snow

This has clearly been Extreme Weather Conditions week. Shabbat afternoon it hailed, and then it snowed, and snowed - then it stopped snowing, but not before a snow day had been declared (this country is pretty wussy, to be honest - closing schools for an inch of snow?) - so Sunday we had off, which I always like. There's just something relaxing about having Sundays off - having Fridays and Shabbat is just not the same. Friday you're busy making shabbat, and shabbat is perversely hard work, and you need Sunday to potter about and do fun stuff. Anyway, the snow is pretty and hard-packed; W has big waterproof glubs, whereas I only have cutesey satin glubs - this gives him a huge advantage in terms of snowballs.

Saturday evening we went across town in quest of a modem; we got a cab because time was pressing, and the driver refused to use the meter, pointing out that he didn't have to work in the snow at all and he was damn well going to charge what he liked - this is illegal, but the chance of being able to get him fined for it is minimal - so we got to the house where the modem was supposed to be, but there was no-one home. The lesson is, always call first.
So we started to head back home, but the snow was coming down again harder, and there were no cabs to be seen; eventually a packed cab stopped and let us in. It contained a) a lady with blonde hair b) a girl with a large suitcase c) the driver and then d) Will and me, soaked and snowy. The lady got out shortly afterwards, then the girl got out a bit after that, then we went to our house. It makes sense to share like that, if you think about it, even if it takes a bit longer. And just by-the-by, Israeli drivers are insane. We were on a busy road with traffic in both directions - someone wanted to do an overtaking which would have been cutting it fine in ordinary weather - the road was covered in snow and ice, and he wasn't using headlights, and he did it anyway - insane. Cars swerving all over the place beeping and screeching.

Sunday we stayed home all morning. It was sunny, we have central heating, W's friend Jonathan came over - they're learning masechet Megillah, I'm writing the Megillah, Jay's sitting on the couch reading the story - for lunch we made sweet potato soup and nice fresh bread, how good does it get?
