Ellul, the month before the High Holy days, is traditionally a season of introspection and repentance, in preparation for the indulgence of spiritual intensity which marks our slide into wintertime.

Except if you're a sofer, when it's just hell on a stick, because everyone wants their Torahs fixed before the High Holy Days, and additionally I'm a big softie so when people call me in a flap because they need their Torahs fixing I try to squeeze them in somehow. So Ellul is not so much a season of taking time to reflect on one's deeds during the past year but rather a scramble of juggling deadlines and working fifteen-hour days (I'm eating lunch right now, if you were wondering how I have time to write this), reassuring people that their Torahs will be with them in time and keeping FedEx in business.

And today I had a nice call from the Women's Torah Project, all friendly and sweet, which gave me a few moments of real Ellul time, a little glow of bein adam le-havero* peace in the crazy swirl of black fire on white fire which is Torah restoration on a tight deadline. Thank you, Neil from the Women's Torah Project,** for a little bit of Ellul.

OK, that was lunch. Back to work :)
