I had a nice day in the studio cleaning muck off a Torah. There were lots of different kinds of muck, including something that looked a lot like lipstick, and some wax, and glue, as well as assorted smeary bits.
I learned an interesting thing about using scalpels to fix Torahs. Normally we don't use metal implements on Torahs on account of metal being used to make weapons and weapons are generally negative things - but scalpels are used in our day for saving lives, which is a highly positive association.
Really it's because it's a pain in the arse to use glass shards and scalpels are far easier to use, of course, but it's a nice justification all the same.
