We're coming up to Yom ha-Shoah, Holocaust Memorial Day.
Do you remember the point in your Holocaust education where you asked "Why didn't the ordinary Germans do anything to help the Jews?" And you were told:
it wasn't reported in the papers
they didn't like Jews anyway
they were scared of the Nazis
they didn't think there was anything they could do
it was mostly happening a long way away
And do you remember how you looked at the pictures of slaughtered Jews, those emaciated corpses, those tragic kiddies, and you thought that those were all really lame excuses?
Well,
it wasn't reported in the papers
Write to your newspaper of choice and tell them you want to hear more about what's happening in the Sudan
they didn't like Jews anyway
Do you care less because it's black people and not Jews being murdered? Displaced, tortured, raped?
they were scared of the Nazis
You don't need to be scared of the American government, and you don't need to be scared of the Sudanese government.
they didn't think there was anything they could do
You can put pressure on your senator. Senators like to look good.

So as long as people aren't being murdered in our neighbourhoods, that's okay, right?
