laptop is dying

I'm very sad. My laptop has been getting steadily more decrepit for a while, and today it refused to light up its screen. There's something going on, because you can see the image, but it's awfully dark, like it needs a new lightbulb. I've had to hijack a monitor from elsewhere. Dell are really rather detestable - I've only had this machine two and a half years, I do not expect something costing a thousand pounds to break before three years are up. Who wants to recommend a brand?
